Bird Flu - Virus And Treatments

By Peterson Kharker at 2010-01-11 05:06:41
u is a disease which has the following symptoms. They are fever with temperature above 38 degree centigrade or 100 degree Fahrenheit. You may also suffer from chills, muscular pain, severe headaches, tiredness, and a loss in your appetite, soreness of the throat, cough and chest pain. The symptoms may last for a few days and will heal with medication.

Some of the people may suffer from this, which may last for a few weeks. What is obliviously needed is a good rest and you are required to consume large quantities of water preferably warm. Symptoms in children may include abdominal pain.

There are over 100 strains of avian flu, but most of them do not infect humans. The current strain H5N1 can infect humans, but not easily. The number of cases of avian flu in humans in the current outbreak is very small, and almost all have come about by direct contact with infected or dead birds – something that most of us are unlikely to experience. So far, the spread of H5N1 virus from person-to-person has been rare and has not continued beyond one person.

The symptoms of bird flu in humans are similar with those of an ordinary flu with fever, cough, muscle aches and short breath. Pay attention if your temperature goes up to 38 degrees, it might be bird flu but, if the temperature is lower it might be only a common flu.

In almost half of the cases bird flu seems to be like an abdominal flu with diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting. So, to be sure you should perform some tests, if you hadn’t been in contact with sick poultry then you don’t need to worry for sure it’s only an ordinary flu.

The influenza virus is a transmittable virus, which spreads from one person to another through tiny droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets are released in the air by these actions.

The virus spreads to humans when they come into contact with infected birds or their secretions. Poultry workers are more likely to be infected, as they are in contact with contaminated material. They, in turn, can infect others through saliva or nasal secretions. Recently there have been reports of the disease spreading in Russia and Kazakhstan. That is why there are fears that it may spread to Europe this winter.

Bird flu (or Avian flu) is currently being used to describe the influenza virus, H5N1, which is producing a highly contagious and rapidly fatal disease, leading to severe epidemics in birds.

Bird flu is caused by different subtypes of influenza A virus affecting chickens, ducks and other birds Viruses which cause mild disease can mutate into viruses that can cause serious disease (highly pathogenic).

Because these viruses do not commonly infect humans, there is little or no immune protection against them in the human population and an influenza pandemic … could begin. Experts …are watching the H5N1 situation in Asia and Europe very closely and are preparing for the possibility that the virus may begin to spread more easily from person to person.

By incorrectly identifying an outbreak as due to H5N1, patients could be treated with anti-virals unnecessarily (thus raising the chances of selecting for drug-resistant strains), unneeded vaccination programs in asymptomatic individuals could be initiated, and damage to local and national economies—through such measures as culling of commercial poultry operations—could occur. Conversely a false-negative test result could lead to catastrophic outcomes, including a pandemic.
