Food Poisoning - Causes And Symptoms

By Peterson Kharker at 2010-01-15 05:02:07
While America’s food supply is the safest in the world, food poisoning is responsible for approximately 76 million illnesses in the United States each year. In fact, it is estimated that 60% or more of the raw poultry sold today probably has disease-causing bacteria. People often recognize these symptoms as a 24-hour stomach virus. The reason why we mistaken food poisoning as another type of medical condition is because exposure to food borne bacteria doesn't always affect everyone in the same way.

About 20 organisms can cause food poisoning. After you eat food contaminated with bacteria, they will multiply in your stomach and bowels. Some bacteria give off a toxin when they multiply. There are several ways by which doctors can test for food poisoning. A urine test may be needed. Also, blood tests are common and may used. Finally, doctors may choose a rectal exam as well.

Poisoning may occur a number of ways and according to WebMD there are over 250 different diseases that can cause food poisoning. Bacteria in water, toxins in foods, foods not cooked to high enough temperatures, lack of hygiene by food preparers, lack of cleanliness where food is prepared, contamination by other animals such as rats or mice, lack of refrigeration, and cross contamination of uncooked foods with cooked foods.

If people who have shared the same food develop the same type of symptoms, or if you develop these symptoms after eating food that hasn't been refrigerated, it is probably poisoning.

Food poisoning usually occurs due to the neglect of the person preparing the food. It is not hard to avoid poisonous bacteria if all foods are properly cooked. If a restaurant serves undercooked food that results in poisoning and did not properly warn their guests about the risks associated with raw food prior to ordering, they might be held liable for damage.Beyond actually trying to neutralize the poison many common foods and herbs can become a remedy for food poisoning. A banana after food poisoning can go a long way in replacing the body with the potassium that has been leeched from the system.

Shigella is a bad bacterium that causes severe diarrhea; it is spread from human to human through fecal matter and poor hygiene. The symptoms of this disease are very similar to Salmonella in that it causes fever, cramps, nausea, and the diarrhea which is usually bloody.

If foods have been handled by people with skin infections and left at room temperature. Symptoms usually come on within 2-8 hours, and usually begin to calm within 12 hours. Seafood and other marine products can contain bacteria and chemicals that cause food poisoning. Of course, the best way to protect yourself from marine toxins is to avoid eating raw seafood.

Symptoms of food poisoning typically arise several hours after the infected products have been ingested. Most cases will resolve themselves without outside treatment, but there are several tips that victims can follow to prevent matters from getting worse.

Though it's relatively rare in the US, food poisoning can happen to anyone. That doesn't mean much if you're the one who gets it. You may get food poisoning at home or while traveling. There could be exceptions. If a particular food processor has poor hygiene standards, or there is a fault in the way food is handled, there could be a raft of consistent food poisoning cases.
