Sprain - Cure And Treatment

By Peterson Kharker at 2010-01-20 04:52:27
Sprains are caused when a particular muscle of the body is suddenly overexerted. It is felt as a sharp pain, rendering that portion of the body immobile for a while. Sprains can cause redness and swelling of the region and can persist for a few days if they are too acute. In very severe cases, sprains can lead to permanent muscular pains and even disfigurement.

Before you worry about strengthening your ankle, you need to restore normal range of motion. Normal motion helps your body to absorb swelling, provides nutrients to the joint surfaces, and will allow the muscles to work efficiently once you do begin strengthening. You can start working on gentle range of motion within the first 24-48 hours after injury. Just remember to make sure it is gentle and relatively pain free. Mild discomfort is ok but avoid severe pain.

Sprains and strains are not helped by "working through them" or by exercising and 'keeping it moving'. Resting and keeping the leg up as much as possible will allow the body to do its own repair job much quicker than trying to carry on as though nothing had happened. Treatment with Connective Tissue Manipulation helps to decrease pain, reduce the swelling, increase range of movement and speed up the healing process.

If you do have an ankle injury you may need X-Rays do make sure you do not have broken bones. If there are no broken bones the ankle should heal in about 4-6 weeks. Depending on the severity of the sprain you may have weakness for 6 to 18 months, though I have had sprains many times and with proper treatment and therapy even 6 months sounds like a long period unless the ligaments are indeed torn.

It is very common to find the ankle joint afflicted by injuries and the most common form is sprain. Anatomically, various ligaments that are stretched or torn surround the ankle joint when it is forced to land in varied unnatural positions. This is of common occurrence during exercises, playing certain sports or accidentally.

A sprain happens when there is sudden movement or change in the direction of the movement is asserted on the joint. This can overstretch the ligaments that support the joint. When the ligaments are overstretched, they then tear and cause some bleeding. This often occurs during activities that involve jumping, running and frequent change in direction.

A sprain is a stretching of the ligaments that join your bones together. They can be painful, and depending on the severity, they can also be debilitating. If you suffer from a second or third degree sprain, which is a tearing of the ligaments as opposed to just stretching them, you can lose your mobility altogether. Sprains can take weeks to heal, and in some cases, physical therapy is needed to gain back all of the movement you had before you suffered a sprained knee.

The key in preventing or reducing the chance of ankle sprains, involves a combination of strengthening and stretching exercises and adequate protection. In sports such as soccer, where ankle sprains occur regularly, preventative bracing or taping is a great way in reducing the chance of an ankle sprain. There is no guaranteed method of preventing an ankle sprain. These devices and techniques are designed to reduce the severity of an injury and improve recovery time.
